Massage Therapy
Massage therapy is the hands-on treatment of soft tissues in the body – primarily the muscles, but also tissues such as the ligaments, tendons, and fascia. Massage therapy helps restore tissue health, reduce pain, and increase joint range of motion. Massage therapy is also beneficial for reducing stress and increasing relaxation, thus contributing to improved wellness and health.
At Shauna Falls Massage therapy a variety of massage techniques such as Swedish massage, deep tissue massage and therapeutic massage techniques are used to provide a personalized treatment plan for each patient. Below the type of techniques employed by Shauna Falls in her massage treatment plans are described in detail.
Swedish Massage Therapy (Relaxation Massage Therapy)
Swedish massage a type of massage used to enhance relaxation. This gentle, soothing type of massage work was developed in Sweden in the 19th century by physiologist Per Henrik Ling. This technique gently manipulates the massage tissue and increases circulation to the area. This increased circulation brings nutrients and oxygen to the muscle and at the same time removes toxins and carbon dioxide. The muscles respond to such a treatment by relaxing. Additionally, Swedish massage engages the “rest and digest” nervous system which allows the recipient and their muscles to relax.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage involves a variety of techniques that are more intense than Swedish massage. Examples of deep tissue techniques include cross-fibre frictions, trigger point therapy and muscle stripping. Deep tissue massage techniques are preferred by clients who want deeper work to address tight sore muscles. This type of massage can be painful, therefore, it is important to note the client is always in control of how much pressure is used to release the muscle tissue. Deep tissue techniques are interwoven with Swedish massage techniques to achieve the balance of releasing tight muscles and reducing pain.
Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic massage includes a variety of massage techniques used to achieve muscle wellness. Therapeutic massage includes Swedish and deep tissue technique as well as a variety of other unique techniques used to address a muscle issue. Therapeutic technique examples include lymphatic drainage, joint mobilizations, fascial release, cross fibre frictions, Golgi tendon organ release, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and contract/relax techniques. Therapeutic massage really is using a combination of the above techniques and choosing to use the best ones to address a condition or issue. Communication with the client is also essential while utilizing these various techniques to achieve the best results.
